We have special fluid-filled tubes in our inner ear which help us balance (a bit like a builder’s spirit level–they tell us when we are balanced) and move around. When we travel, the fluid can move around inside these tubes, so we end up feeling dizzy or sick. If you look out the window when you’re in a car, you can see where you’re going and your brain can override those signals a bit–if you read, you don’t get those visual signals, so you feel more sick. It’s similar for sea-sickness. I live on a boat and I don’t feel sea sick at all when it wobbles, because I’ve adjusted.
