Our bodies are made up of lots and lots of tiny cells, which are like little bags filled with a jelly that is mostly water, with some nutrients and chemicals floating in it, along with little “organs” that the cell needs to function. Like a balloon filled with air, this jelly (called cytoplasm) needs to have the right amount of water to keep the cells at the right pressure, so they don’t burst or collapse. We lose water through a lot of our body processes, so we need to drink a lot to replace it, or our cells will deflate and die and our bodies won’t be able to carry out essential functions like digesting food.
