      Hi Jedi8177
There are hundreds of different causes of hiccups. They happen when the diaphragm contracts out of sync. My kids often get them when they drink too fast. There are no treatments that work every time. Breathing in slowly, swallowing at the top then breathing out slowly sometimes works but not always. It is possible to have hiccups for a very long time if the diaphragm gets stuck into the pattern of contracting (this is very unusual).

Hiccups are caused by quick contraction of the diaphragm, which is a muscle under your lungs. There are lots of things that can cause them, such as eating or drinking too fast, or certain medications or medical conditions. I’m not really sure why we have them though, and I think there are several theories that try to explain why we evolved the ability to hiccup.

As others have said, hiccups occur when the diaphragm contracts too quickly. For me they always happen when I laugh and breathe in too much air at once.
