      Hi mrsciencedog1802
I really enjoy the science I do because it is all about people – I ask people how they want to use genetic technology. For example the NHS will be offering ‘sequencing’ to some patients, e.g. those with cancer, this means that all of that person’s 20,000 genes will be looked at. I’m interested to know what information should be shared back – just information relevant to cancer and treatment? but what about other information contained in the genes, e.g. risk of dementia or high cholesterol?

Is it ‘unethical’ (i.e. unreasonable) to offer information to a cancer patient about things totally unrelated to their cancer, would they be upset by this? maybe they’d want the information but perhaps once their treatment has finished? Perhaps they’d want this information because they have kids and anything about genetics is also relevant to relatives?

These are the questions I answer through my research and then I share my findings with the people who oversee the testing.
